Canadian Forces Communications is basically no different then any other nations.  Just maybe not as complicated.  Below, first listed, are the bases in ontario that are close to Durham Region. Base communications are primary in the VHF region with any air operations operations in the VHF and UHF bands.

CFB Borden - Barrie

The historic birthplace of the Royal Canadian Air Force, CFB Borden is the largest training facility in the Canadian Forces. The base is run by Canadian Forces Support Training Group (CFSTG) and reports to the Canadian Defence Academy (CDA) in Kingston.

Although originally an air force training base, CFB Borden is now a training base for several elements of the Canadian Forces:

  • AIRCOM's primary lodger unit, 16 Wing, consists of three schools: Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering (CFSATE), Air Command Academy (ACA), and the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Control Operations (CFSACO) (located off-base at Cornwall).
  • LFC's regular force and reserve force army units use a number of training schools and large portions of the base's 22,300-acre (90 km²) training area for manoevres.
  • MARCOM uses the base for the Naval Reserve Training Division (NRTD), where naval reserve non-commissioned members undergo a 9 week Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) course.

In addition to these specific environmental element commands, CFB Borden houses a variety of other purple trades training facilities and headquarters within the Canadian Forces, including a fire fighting school, a chaplaincy school, the Canadian Forces Recruiting Group, medical, dental and language schools, and supports local cadet and reserve units. The Toronto Police Service's Emergency Task Force also trains there occasionally.

CFB Borden hosts the Blackdown Cadet Training Centre, a training establishment for Royal Canadian Army Cadets and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Ontario.

CFB Borden's residential area houses two golf courses, one 9-hole links style course (Anderson Park, Par 36 ) and one regulation sized golf course (Circled Pine Golf Course, Par 72 ). Circled Pine Golf Course and Anderson Park Course opened in 1952 and 1917 respectively. The courses are open to the public and serving military.

The Base Borden Military Museum (combining four separate museums) has numerous items, equipment and vehicles from all eras of Canadian military history, including a large number historic armoured vehicles and aircraft displayed outside in Worthington Park and around the headquarters area of the base.

CF HF MACS Communications

Canadian Forces HF communications is not as extensive as the United States, but none the less, just as important.  The primary HF network used is the Canadian Military Aeronautical Communications System or otherwise called MACS.  There is one other HF system you will hear the Canadian Forces aircraft use and that is the U.S. Global HF System or GHFS.

The following frequencies are used by the Canadian Military Aeronautical Communications System or otherwise called MACS.  The main station on this network is CFB Trenton using the call sign CHR - Trenton Military.  Other stations include: Edmonton (remote from Trenton) and St. John's.

USAF Global HF System

The Global HF System (GHFS) was stated by the US Air Force in June of 1992. This system was created by consolidating several other USAF HF networks, including the Strategic Air Command "Giant Talk" system. The goal of the system was to develope a worldwide HF network for providing Command & Control HF communictions to all authorized DOD aircraft and ground stations.

When you hear an aircraft or any stations calling "MAINSAIL" on any of the GHFS frequencies this is a "general" call for any ground station to answer and provided the calling stations with what ever he needs. Any GHFS ground station will respond to the call "MAINSAIL". Depending on the service required, the station bay request the aircraft to change to a discrete frequency for improved and extended service.

EAM's or Emergency Action Message. Another very important aspect of the GHFS is the transmission of EAM's. EAM's are the coded military orders or bulletins that have the highest priority. When EAM's are broadcast, ALL other users of the system are to standby. If you hear a voice giving a long series of letters phonically this is an EAM.

SKYKING messages are special EAM's. These presumably could be the nuclear go/no-go codes. There was a higher than normal number of EAM's and SKYKING messages being transmitted after the attackes of 9/11/01. Urgent SKYKING messages are repeated three or four times instead of the usual two. SKYKING is a group callsign, meaning "Any this net." "Do not answer" is the standard procedure ofr self-authenticating broadcasts, meaning that recipients don't need to give away their positions or existence by challenging the orders. While tuned to any of the GHFS frequncies and hear "SKYKING SKYKING Do not answer" you can bet you're hearing a very important, highest priority, and heavily encrypted message!

Canadian Forces aircraft will use the GHFS when they cannot contact their CF MACS system. CF aircraft will only use this system for phone patches.

NORAD Command

NORADNorth American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a joint organization of Canada and the United States that provides aerospace warning and defense for North America. It was founded on May 12, 1958, as the North American Air Defense Command. Its main technical facility has been the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center in Colorado, and for this reason NORAD is sometimes unofficially referred to as Cheyenne Mountain.

NORAD's headquarters facilities in Colorado are administered by the U.S. Air Force under the command of the 721st Mission Support Group, part of the 21st Space Wing, headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base. NORAD's forces consist of the Alaskan NORAD Region/Eleventh Air Force, Canadian NORAD Region, and Continental NORAD Region.

Headquarters NORAD is located at Peterson AFB, Colorado Springs, Colo. NORAD command and control is exercised through the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center, located a short distance away. Cheyenne Mountain serves as a central collection and coordination facility for a worldwide system of sensors designed to provide NORAD with an accurate picture of any aerospace threat.

NORAD

Canadian NORAD (CANR) Region
Canadian NORAD Region Headquarters at CFB Winnipeg, is responsible for providing surveillance and control of the Canadian airspace. The Canadian Forces Air Command provides alert assets to NORAD. CANR is divided into two sectors, which are designated as the Canada East Sector and the Canada West Sector. Both Sector Operations Control Centers (SOCCs) are co-located at CFB North Bay, Ontario. The routine operation of the SOCCs includes reporting track data, sensor status and aircraft alert status to NORAD headquarters.

1st Canadian Air Division is the military organization responsible for providing combat-ready air forces to meet Canada's commitments to the defense of North America and to maintain the sovereignty of Canadian airspace. Canadian air defense forces assigned to NORAD include 441 and 416 Tactical Fighter Squadrons at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta, and 425 and 433 Tactical Fighter Squadrons at CFB Bagotville, Quebec. All four squadrons fly the CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft.

Since 1991, NORAD has assisted in the detection and monitoring of aircraft suspected of illegal drug trafficking. In cooperation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and U.S. drug law enforcement agencies, the Canadian NORAD Region monitors all air traffic approaching the coast of Canada. Any aircraft that has not filed a flight plan may be directed to land and be inspected by the RCMP and Customs Canada.

Canadian NORAD Command
The Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) Headquarters encompasses one wing (22 Wing) and two sectors (Canada East (CE) and Canada West (CW)). Both sectors are operated by the 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron (21 AC&W Sqn). The Headquarters CANR, and 22 Wing, are at North Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Channel's & Frequencies

Frequencies which have been reported in all U.S. sectors and possibly Canadian sectors are listed as “Nationwide” to conserve space. Most “Nationwide” frequencies have probably  been assigned a BLUE channel designator, and hobbyists have started to compile a handful of these.

NORAD has about 200 frequencies with color/number channel designators assigned. None of the information in this report is known to be classified, though NORAD has not released site or frequency information to the public. All information here has been compiled from hobbyists reports.

Interceptor aircraft on combat air patrol missions will often attempt to communicate with ARTCC’s on 243.000 (UHF Emergency Guard) and/or with civil aircraft on 121.500 (VHF Emergency Guard).

Naval Military Callsigns

Below is a link to the ACP 113 (AG) Call Sign Book for Ships, dated November 2007.  This publication is released by the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

It nearly lists all the NATO and (some) other allied nations naval vessels, by name, by call sign and by class.
